Native cross-chain transfers are live, shipped through Axelar Network — not a homegrown protocol, not a trusted custodian's wrapped token, but a general message-passing rail that now binds one of crypto's oldest payment chains to the sprawling EVM economy. The official framing is simple: expansion. Interoperability. Liberation, even. In my years tearing apart ICO contracts and watching bridges drain billions, that framing deserves suspicion before celebration.
Because "native" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence. It suggests seamlessness, organic architecture, a capability XRPL grew on its own. A legacy L1 with institutional credibility badges — RippleNet, bank relationships, a mainstream narrative around cross-border payments — now sits on Axelar's coverage map. That positioning is invaluable as interoperability protocols compete for integrations, and Axelar gets it without committing meaningful capital. XRPL, meanwhile, takes on a dependency on Axelar's operational reliability, its validator health, and its future policy decisions. The ledger doesn't lecture about sovereignty; it just records the outcomes of infrastructure choices.
Then there's governance — or the silence of it. XRPL amendments require validator votes, formalized community deliberation. An external integration like this — which effectively authorizes a third-party network to mediate XRPL's connection to the broader economy — can ship without that process.
